Les Viles: the balance between man and nature

Les Viles ("villages" in Ladin) are groups of houses presumably born from a family unit that then expanded to become an agglomeration of houses where social life is the master. They are unique in their kind and are characteristic of the Val Badia area: they represent the first human settlements.

The origin of Les Viles goes back to the people of the Reti, who built the first alpine huts. The structure of these houses is divided into three parts: the "ćiasa", the upper part where you live and the lower part where you can find the cellar, warehouse and laboratory; the "majun", the ground floor with the stable; the "tablé", the barn which is surrounded by a balcony.

Les Viles are an interesting destination for those visiting Val Pusteria because they are unique in their kind. Once you arrive you immediately feel the magic of sharing: in the center of Les Viles, arranged in a circle or semicircle, there are all the services for collective life. A square, a fountain, a bread oven, a carpentry shop or a forge. All the houses create a community that lives and lives of the same things, in the same way.

The tradition has come down to today also thanks to the custom of leaving the home to the first male child of the family. Born as a source of security for the inhabitants, it is an excellent single of what it means to unite to create a solidarity and fraternal environment where the balance between man and the environment is still clearly visible

Les Viles have a great importance from a cultural and social point of view and can still be admired today, for example in Longiarú. The "Roda dles Viles" is a splendid circular hike that from Longiarù reaches the traditional Viles (in about 2 hours and 45 minutes), through woods and splendid valleys.
