Repertoire

The choirs are absolutely free to choose the pieces they wish to perform. There are no mandatory requirements to perform particular songs nor are there bans on periods or music genres. Indeed, the Festival has six big sections to accommodate a variety of genres:

a) Sacred – religious repertoire
b) Cultivated secular polyphony
c) Folk choral music
d) Opera
e)Spiritual, Gospel, Jazz
f) Original choral arrangements

Indicate the repertoire – one or more – and the type of choir in the application form.
You will be asked to provide a detailed list of pieces, the preferred type and number of performances after registration.

A) SACRED – RELIGIOUS REPERTOIRE

Christian sacred music, from the origins to the contemporary age. Lyrics can be in Latin (passages from the Mass or sacred texts) or they can have a religious content (Italian lauds, Lutheran choirs, popular prayer songs). The religious repertoire is performed in churches; usually churches are not very big but their acoustics is always good, even extraordinary in some cases.

B) CULTIVATED SECULAR POLYPHONY

Polyphonic/contrapuntal elaborations of cultivated poetry (Renaissance’s madrigals, classic or contemporary poetic literature).
This repertoire is performed in concert halls.

C) FOLK CHORAL MUSIC

Choral/polyphonic elaborations of popular traditional songs, preferably with lyrics in the language of the origin country. The performance can be accompanied by traditional instruments and choreographies.
The popular repertoire is performed in concert halls, theatres and outdoor venues, in music pavilions or in alpine refuges.

D) OPERA

Choir passages from operas or symphonies.
This repertoire is performed in concert halls; for this repertoire a grand piano is always available.

E) SPIRITUAL, GOSPEL, JAZZ

Choral/polyphonic elaborations in the style of ‘blues’. Religious melodies borrowed from the tradition of American ‘Spirituals’, with English lyrics; polyphonic compositions borrowing the style of jazz and gospel.
This style may cross over into pop music with microphones and electronic instruments.

F) ORIGINAL CHORAL ARRANGEMENTS

Choral/polyphonic elaborations of melodies which were not originally composed for a choir; for example: pieces from the instrumental classical repertoire, soundtracks, famous pop melodies.
Sections e) and f) are performed in concert halls. When the use of electronic instruments is required the concert halls are equipped with an amplification system.
